Hangover Prevention and Relief (Hangover Remedies!)
Pre-drinking Preventative Measures
- Make sure you have a full stomach. This will cause your absorption of alcohol to be much slower, giving your body the chance to deal with the toxins before they poison you too much.
- Be hydrated. This means drink plenty of water. One of the primary symptoms of a hangover is dehydration. Make sure you stay hydrated and it will help quite a bit.
- Taking N-acetylcysteine with vitamin B1 and C have been claimed to prevent hangovers
- Plan your drinking. If you know what you're going drink ahead of time you can plan on avoiding large amounts of alcohol inducing drinks such as red wine, whiskey, and other dark colored drinks in favor of clear drinks.
While You're Drinking...
- Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water. At least one glass of water for each drink will go a long way.
- Powerade, Gatorade, and other non-caffeinated sports drinks are excellent for keeping hydrated. Avoid drinks with too much sugar, though.
- Keep your stomach full. This will help regulate the flow of alcohol into your body.
- If you feel like you need to throw up...do it! Your body is telling you that it's overloaded with poison, and it doesn't want any more. Throwing up may be unpleasant, but you will almost always feel better afterward and in the morning.
- Before you go to bed, drink as much water as you can, eat some solid food, and take some ibuprofen.
Post Drinking
- Drink water. Drink it till your bladder hurts. Well, maybe not quite that much. Basically drink as much as you can hold. It'll go a long way.
- Eat some food. I nice deli sandwich works well.
- Sleep. Nothing like sleeping off that drunkenness. If you think you might puke while you're sleeping, be sure to sleep on your side or face down. Otherwise you could choke on your own puke.
- If you wake up in the middle of the night, drink some water. Keep some right beside your bed.
- If you need to, take some ibuprofen.
- Bloody Marys and other alcoholic hangover cures don't work. At best, they can delay the hangover, but they can worsen your symptoms in the long run.
Watch What You Drink...
- Clear alcohols have been shown to cause fewer hangovers for the same amount of alcohol drunk...One study showed that for the same amount of alcohol drunk, 33% of bourbon drinkers got hangovers as opposed to just 3% of vodka drinkers. As a general rule, dark colored drinks, especially hard alcohols and wine, are more likely to give you a hangover than their see-through cousins.
- Stay away from caffeine. Coffee, soda, tea, and other caffeinated drinks can actually make your hangover worse. Why? Because they're diuretics. In other words, they make liquids and stuff go through your body much faster. You get dehydrated more quickly! So...stay away from caffeine.
The basic premise behind most these remedies is that you're either limiting how fast your body absorbs the alcohol, or increasing your bodies ability to process it. The underlying message behind this is that moderation is the only way you can effectively prevent hangovers. And watch out, because heavy drinking is believed to harm male fertility, cause erectile dysfunction, and decrease testosterone levels. Please, remember that this is just information on the internet, so consult a doctor if you have any questions.
